SINOPSIS:
Ceritanya berawal ketika sebuah stasiun angkasa luar di orbit bumi yang sedang dalam misi perbaikan dengan pesawat ulang alik, ketika hujan meteor yang tidak terduga menghantamnya sehingga hancur lebur. Tidak hanya itu, batu-batu meteor yang berukuran kecil ternyata mampu membuat lubang berukuran besar di permukaan bumi seperti yang terjadi pada salah satu kota besar di bumi. Rupanya hujan meteor ini merupakan pendahuluan dari asteroid yang berukuran sebesar Texas. Seorang astonomer amatir yang pertama kali menemukannya, memberitahukan NASA, bahwa asteroid itu menuju ke bumi dalam waktu 18 hari mendatang. Setelah menganalisis penemuan astronomer tersebut, pihak NASA yang dipimpin Dan Truman (Billy Bob Thornton) ternyata mendapatkan kesimpulan yang sangat mengerikan karena asteroid itu dapat mengulangi bencana kiamat seperti yang pernah terjadi sekitar 65 juta tahun lampau.

Kiamat yang terjadi puluhan juta tahun lalu itu memusnahkan spesies yang pernah menguasai bumi, yakni dinosaurus. Akhirnya Dan Truman pun memberitahu Presiden Amerika Serikat bahwa bencana hantaman asteroid itu terhadap bumi akan dapat membuat kiamat yang menghancurkan segala kehidupan di permukaan bumi. Setelah mendapatkan berbagai masukan mengenai cara yang dapat mencegah asteroid menghantam bumi, akhirnya diputuskan bahwa penanaman bom nuklir dengan cara pemboran di asteroid yang dianggap paling besar kemungkinan akan keberhasilannya. Masalahnya tidak satupun para astronot profesional yang dimiliki Amerika maupun negara lain memiliki kemampuan untuk membor asteroid tersebut. Akhirnya pihak NASA menoleh pada kemungkinan lain, yakni sebuah kelompok pembor minyak yang dapat melakukan usaha tersebut yang maha sulit, jika tidak bisa dibilang mustahil.

Kelompok pembor minyak pimpinan Harry Stamper (Bruce Willis) memenuhi kriteria tersebut, karena mereka mempunyai reputasi paling tinggi dalam keberhasilan membor lapisan permukaan bumi yang paling keras sekalipun untuk mencari minyak. Masalahnya kelompok pembor itu bukanlah para astronot yang terlatih untuk mengarungi angkasa luar. Dengan waktu yang pendek itu, kelompok pembor minyak Harry Stamper harus dilatih menjadi astronot. Tidak heran apabila banyak masalah yang mewarnai pelatihan tersebut, apalagi sebenarnya ada beberapa orang anggota Harry tidak memenuhi syarat untuk menjadi astronot. Selain itu, juga ada masalah lain seperti adanya ketegangan hubungan Harry dengan salah satu anak buahnya, yakni A.J. Frost (Ben Affleck) lantaran A.J. nekat berhubungan dengan putri Harry, Grace Stamper (Liv Tyler), padahal hubungan itu tidak disukai oleh Harry. Masalah-masalah tersebut dapat mengganggu keefektifan misi penyelamatan umat manusia.
